Shirley Alyn Hines exemplifies the spirit of dedication, generosity, and lifelong commitment that defines the Virginia State University Athletics Wall of Fame. A proud alumna, devoted supporter, and transformational benefactor, Hines has dedicated decades of service, advocacy, and philanthropy to ensuring the continued success and well-being of VSU student-athletes.
Originally from Boston, Massachusetts, Hines attended Virginia State University for both her undergraduate and graduate studies, earning her bachelor’s degree in Special Education in 1972 and her master’s degree in Educational Administration and Supervision in 1977. As a student, she was deeply engaged in campus life, joining the VSU Tennis Club, serving on the first women’s ROTC rifle team in 1971, and becoming a member of the charter line of the Pershing Angels military sorority, proudly known as the “Original 32.”
Hines’ connection to VSU Athletics began as a student in the stands, cheering on Trojan teams, and evolved into a lifelong bond rooted in pride, loyalty, and gratitude. A life member of the Virginia State University Alumni Association since 2003 and a long-time member of the VSU Athletic Club, she has supported VSU Athletics for more than 21 years financially and for nearly six decades through unwavering encouragement and advocacy.
Her commitment to Virginia State University is deeply personal and family-centered. Hines and her husband, Robert Hines, met as students at Virginia State College more than fifty years ago, beginning a legacy that spans generations. Both of their children are proud Virginia State University alumni whose lives reflect the values of Trojan Athletics. Their son, Rashaan Hines (April 5, 1981 – November 1, 2019), earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Education and Technology. Their daughter, Tiya Hines, graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Visual Communication Art and Design in 2005 and is also a VSU Athletics Hall of Famer, further extending the family’s legacy of excellence and achievement.
Inspired in part by her daughter’s experience as a VSU softball student-athlete, Hines established the Rashaan and Tiya Hines Softball Endowment Fund, ensuring future student-athletes can focus on their sport and academic pursuits without the burden of fundraising. This endowment reflects both a mother’s love and a steadfast belief in creating opportunity for generations to come.
Professionally, Hines dedicated her career to public education, serving 11 years as a special education teacher, 19 years as a Special Education Program Specialist, and one year as Interim Assistant Special Education Director with Petersburg Public Schools. She also co-founded VSU’s first adapted physical education program, forging a meaningful partnership between the university and local schools while expanding opportunities for students with special needs.
Now residing in Petersburg, Virginia, Hines remains active in civic and community organizations and continues to champion the values that make VSU Athletics special. Her induction into the VSU Athletics Wall of Fame honors a legacy rooted in family, service, generosity, and the enduring belief that when student-athletes are supported, they are empowered to succeed—and to give that support forward.
