Virginia State University Athletics

Derrick Blount is one of the most accomplished student-athletes in the history of Virginia State University men’s track and field. A native of Richmond, Virginia, Blount’s career was defined by sustained excellence, leadership, and an unmatched competitive résumé that firmly places him among VSU’s all-time greats. 

Over the course of his collegiate career, Blount earned seven NCAA All-American honors across indoor and outdoor seasons, excelling in the 60-meter hurdles, 110-meter hurdles, long jump, and as a member of the 4x100 meter relay. His dominance within the CIAA resulted in multiple conference championships and All-Conference selections, including being named CIAA Indoor Champion in the Long Jump (2000) and CIAA Outdoor Champion in the 110-meter hurdles in three consecutive seasons. 

Blount was a seven-time Team MVP, a four-time team captain, and earned VSU Student-Athlete of the Year honors in 2002. That same year, he broke the VSU school record in the 110-meter hurdles, further cementing his place in the program’s record books. His excellence extended nationally, earning NCAA Indoor All-American honors in the long jump and hurdles and NCAA Outdoor All-American recognition in both the hurdles and relay. 

Blount cites one of his most meaningful moments as helping his teammates achieve All-American status in the 4x100 meter relay, reflecting his team-first mentality and leadership. 

While at Virginia State, Blount studied Health and Physical Education, representing the university with distinction in competition, in the classroom, and within the campus community. 

Following his time at VSU, Blount remained deeply connected to the sport and to mentorship. He currently serves as an AAU track coach for Legion of Zoom and as a track coach at Highland Springs High School, mentoring the next generation of student-athletes. He is also an active member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. and works professionally as a Welcome Desk Manager at American Family Fitness. 

This induction holds special significance, as Blount joins his grandfather as a member of the VSU Athletics Hall of Fame, extending a remarkable family legacy within Trojan Athletics.
