Hall of Fame
The 1977 Men’s 4x100-meter Relay Team made history for Virginia State University Athletics as the only team to win an NCAA national championship and just the second team inducted into the VSU Athletics Hall of Fame. Their achievement stands as a defining moment in the legacy of Trojan Athletics.
The team, consisting of John Christian, Fred Johnson, Cecil Mitchell, and Lindberg Morris, captured the 1977 NCAA Division II Outdoor National Championship in the 4x100-meter relay with a record time of 40.60 seconds.
The team was coached by the late William "Pete" Bennett, a member of the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame, the CIAA Hall of Fame, and the VSU Athletics Hall of Fame. The championship performance marked a significant milestone for the Virginia State University track and field program.
