Avis Wyatt established himself as one of the premier defensive players in the history of Virginia State University men’s basketball. A native of Petersburg, Virginia, his impact as a Trojan was defined by elite rim protection, consistency, and an ability to change the game on the defensive end. 

Wyatt ranks first all-time in CIAA history for career blocked shots with 350, a total that also places him 10th all-time in NCAA history. Over 113 career games, he averaged 3.10 blocks per game, ranking 25th in the nation and third in the CIAA in blocked shot average. During the 2006–07 season, he set a VSU single-season record with 92 blocked shots and led the CIAA at 3.2 blocks per game, cementing his reputation as the conference’s most dominant interior defender. 

Selected to the CIAA Preseason Team entering the 2006–07 season, Wyatt was recognized as one of the conference’s top players. He went on to deliver a standout campaign that earned First Team All-CIAA honors and the prestigious title of CIAA Defensive Player of the Year, while also reaching the 1,000-point scoring milestone, demonstrating his growth into a complete two-way player. 

In addition to his basketball achievements, Wyatt also competed in track and field as a high jumper and was a proud member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. He studied Computer Information Systems, balancing academic responsibilities with high-level athletic performance. 

Following his collegiate career, Wyatt continued playing professionally overseas, earning distinction as a two-time Dutch Champion, two-time Cup Winner, and a multiple-time All-League First Team selection, while also capturing several blocks leader titles, further extending his legacy as an elite defender. 

Today, Wyatt resides in Chesterfield, Virginia, with his wife, Tiara Wyatt, and their two children, Ayden (15) and Ace (9). He remains deeply committed to giving back to the game as a youth sports coach and mentor in football and basketball and currently coaches with the Beulah Athletic Association. Professionally, he works as a Control Systems Technician at DuPont.
