VSU's Alexis McNair Named CIAA 2022-23 Female Student-Athlete of the Year

ETTRICK, VA- Alexis McNair of the Virginia State University Volleyball team was selected as the 2022-2023 CIAA Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) held its annual Spring General Assembly meeting and end-of-year awards reception in Richmond, VA. The conference office announced its highest administrative and team awards at the reception on Tuesday afternoon.

McNair is the epitome of an outstanding student-athlete. She currently balances a perfect 4.0 GPA as a mass communications major with a minor in sports management. McNair is also the captain of the VSU Volleyball team and an active member of VSU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). Her peers voted and selected her to be the SAAC President for next year, this year she served as the SAAC Communications Chair.

On the court, McNair recorded 136 kills, 41 digs, and accounted for 157 of VSU points this season.

"I'm so honored to have even been considered a nominee for CIAA Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year," said McNair. "I wouldn't be the woman I am today if it weren't for my support system. First and most importantly, keeping God in the forefront of my life and trusting that he will guide me in the right direction has had the biggest impact on my success. I am extremely grateful for the endless experiences and opportunities that have been accessible to me from being a Student-Athlete at Virginia State University."

The Ashland, VA native received the Arthur Ashe Jr Sports Scholar award and the VSU Volleyball Coaches Choice award at the VSU Athletic Banquet. Coach Walker described McNair as the type of student-athlete every coach needs on their team.

Her campus involvement is a testament to her many leadership qualities and character. She is a member of the Honors College, the Junior Class Council Secretary, a member of the National Society of Leadership and Success, and a Social Media Coordinator with Greater Media Productions.

Her distinct dedication to her future career is evident and evolving through her leadership on and off the campus of VSU. She attended the Black Sports Business Academy in February.

McNair has completed internships with the Marvin Smith Basketball Camp as an Event Coordinator and with the Richmond Flying Squirrels in their Executive Trainee position. She has also secured an internship for next Fall.

McNair has participated in several SAAC community service and campus initiatives; field day at Ettrick Elementary, SAAC Week events, First Day of School at Ettrick Elementary, and packing meals for the homeless at Jerusalem Baptist Church.

McNair also volunteers at the Chesterfield Food Bank every third Saturday of the month. She has additionally volunteered at the Advanced Adult Daycare weekly since January 2022.

When McNair graduated from high school with an advanced placement degree and a 4.2 GPA, she had her sights on continuing her academics and volleyball career in the same fashion. The leadership, community, and tradition that the CIAA is built upon are evident through student-athletes like McNair.
