Trojans Look to Earn a Pair of Wins in Home Opener

ETTRICK, VA  – After having their home opener postponed, the VSU softball team prepares for their home opener against Bluefield State College in a doubleheader. Last time out, the Trojans dropped their first game of the season 2-7 prior losing 8-11 after allowing all 11 runs in the second inning.
 
 

The freshman Hailey Darrington leads the team at the plate, as she leads the team in hits (2), runs (3) and stolen bases (2). Darrington and Macy Beville lead the team with a .333 batting average. Julia Jones drove in a season-high two runs after putting a ball over the fence in the second game of the Barton series. The team hits .167 from the plate with an on-base percentage of .231. The pitching rotation allows 6.30 earned runs per contest and have allowed 12 hits. Desmyn Owens and Leah Harrison have spearheaded the pitching rotation as Owens leads the team with four strikeouts and just two walks. Harrison currently leads the team in put outs with seven while Owens leads with three assisted outs.

About Bluefield State
The Bluefield State College Big Blue are 0-5 on the season after dropping a pair to UVA-Wise 8-1 and 19-3. BSC struggles mightily offensively as the team has scored just six runs in seven games this season. The Big Blue has accumulated 10 hits on the season as they hit .119 as a team. The squad has struck out 44 times while only drawing seven walks. Defensively, the Big Blue has given up 69 runs on 57 hits while allowing opponents to maintain a .523 batting average against them. BSC will look to clean up their play as they have committed 16 errors this season. Emma Crawford leads the team with a .300 batting average, hits (3), walks (2), on-base percentage (.417) and doubles (1). The Big Blue pitching rotation gives up 16.45 earned runs per contest as Madison Thompson leads the team with four strikeouts.


 
Series History
The Trojans are 7-0 against the Big Blue in matchups dating back 2014. The Trojans average 9.7 runs against BSC with their largest margin of victory being in 2017 when VSU won 18-6. VSU took the last matchup in 2020 as 11 hits led the squad to a 13-3 win.
