ETTRICK, VA (January 3, 2020)- The Virginia State University men's and women's basketball teams are set to open the new year with a home matchup against the Broncos of Fayetteville State University on Saturday, January 4. The women's game will tipoff at 2 p.m., followed by the men's game at 4 p.m.
Women's Matchup
Entering the contest with an 8-6 overall record, 2-2 in the CIAA, the Trojans rounded out the first half of the season with a 70-52 loss to the Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith University on December 21.
The Lady Broncos ended 2019 with a 55-39 loss to the Bulldogs of Bowie State University. The loss currently has FSU holding a 5-7 overall record, 4-2 in the CIAA.
The Trojans are currently led by
Natalia Leaks with 11.9 points and 4.9 rebounds per game.
For FSU, Katisha Hyman leads with a 19.1 scoring average while Chantel Williams controls the recoveries for the Lady Broncos with 5.1 rebounds per game.
VSU women's basketball last faced the FSU Lady Broncos on December 15, 2018, where the Trojans fell short of a win, 51-41.
Men's Matchup
The VSU men's basketball team are entering the contest with a 9-4 overall record, 3-2 in the CIAA after taking down the Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith University on December 21 (99-60). Â
FSU is coming off of an 88-78 win over Francis Marin on January 2, currently holding them at a 12-2 overall record, 4-2 in the conference.
Leading the Trojans with an average of 12.8 points per game is newcomer Francis "BJ" Fitzgerald.
Andrew Corum remains consistent under the basket for VSU, averaging 5.6 rebounds per game.
The Broncos are led by Jalen Seegars averaging 16.7 points and 4.0 rebounds per game. Â
VSU men's basketball last faced the FSU Broncos on December 15, 2018, where the Trojans were victorious, 69-54.Â
