Defensive effort leads Virginia State past 75-61

PETERSBURG, VA --The Virginia State men's basketball team held to just 17.6 percent from deep in a 3-for-17 shooting performance on the way to a 75-61 victory over the at home Friday.

The Trojans (21-10) had three players score in double figures, led by Jacob Cooper, who had 22 points, eight assists and three steals. Davian Coleman tacked on 10 points and Amare Wimbush helped out with 10 points and seven rebounds off of the bench.

Virginia State utilized fantastic ball movement in Friday's game, piling up 16 assists on 26 made field goals. Cooper's eight assists paced the Trojans.

Virginia State did a great job disrupting shots in the contest, coming away with six blocks. Jaylen Wynn led the way individually for the Trojans with two rejections.

How It Happened

After falling behind 30-22, Virginia State went on an 8-0 run with 3:43 left in the first half to tie the game at 30. then pulled ahead, sending the Trojans into halftime down 34-30.

After intermission, Virginia State managed to gain control and had a 44-43 lead before going on a 9-0 run, finished off by Jared Clawson's jumper, to grow the lead to 53-43 with 11:11 to go in the contest. The Trojans kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 75-61 win. Virginia State took care of business in the paint, recording 24 of its 45 points in the lane.
