PETERSBURG, VA --The Virginia State men's basketball team went into the halftime break trailing Bluefield State 36-28, but fought back from the deficit to beat the Big Blues 69-66 at home Saturday.

Jacob Cooper led the Trojans (22-10) with 29 points and three steals. Jared Clawson also tacked on nine points and eight rebounds and Amare Wimbush helped out with nine points and three steals off the bench.

After playing to a 4-4 tie, Virginia State went on a 5-0 run with 17:11 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Cooper, to take a 9-4 lead. The Trojans then surrendered that lead and entered halftime down 36-28.

Bluefield State kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 66-57 advantage before Virginia State went on a 12-0 run to seize a 69-66 lead with 30 seconds to go in the contest, The Trojans held onto that lead for the rest of the game for the 69-66 win. Virginia State got a boost from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for 12 of its 41 total points.
