Softball Breezes Past Bulldogs in Doubleheader Action

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BOWIE, MD (April 8, 2018)- Virginia State Trojans breezed past the Bulldogs of Bowie State on April 8, improving their record to 14-10 overall, 10-0 in CIAA conference play, including 4-0 in the Northern Division.

THE BASICS
SCORE| Virginia State 12, Bowie State 1
GAME-BY-GAME| Virginia State 15, Bowie State 2
VSU RECORD | 14-10 overall, 10-0 CIAA
WINNING STREAK| 11 games

GAME 1
The Trojans got off to a stellar start in the top of the first inning, bringing in a whopping six runs by Vanessa Ruby, Dominique Mulero, Tatyana Jordan, Kennedy Presson, Amirah Chaney, and Samantha Cunningham. VSU set the tone for how the rest of the conference play matchup would go.

Plagued by an abundance of errors to give up the runs, the Bulldogs were able to score a single run in the bottom of the first by Ja'Seph Smith. The Trojans kept their foot on the gas scoring three runs in the second inning (Ayannah Bowman, Vanessa Ruby, Dominique Mulero), and a left field homerun by Mulero in the third inning, chipped in two more runs as she bought Ruby in.

The Trojans finished off the game with a run from Bowman in the fifth, to increase the score to 12-1. Mulero handled the mound, only giving up a total of two hits against the Bulldogs.

GAME 2
Game two was similar for the Trojans, as they continued their success at the home plate. VSU ended the first inning with a total of three runs (Bowman, Mulero, and Ruby) and scored in every inning of their 15-2 victory. Bowie found life in the second inning, scoring two runs by Morgan White and Ja'Seph Smith. Although the Bulldogs capitalized on the fielding errors of the Trojans, they could not hold off the Trojans as they were in full force. Over the next three innings, VSU tallied a total of eight runs, bringing the final score to 15-2, in favor of Virginia State. Mulero only gave up three hits at the home plate, compared to the 11 that the Trojans were able to put up.

UP NEXT
The Trojans will next travel to Alberta, VA on Thursday, April 12, at 5 P.M. to match up against the Southside Virginia Community College, a team that they matched up with just three weeks ago here in Ettrick.
