Box Score 2 ELIZABETH CITY, NC (March 17, 2018)- The Virginia State University softball team holds a four game winning streak at the 2018 CIAA Roundup after taking down Johnson C. Smith University (11-9) and Fayetteville State University (3-2) on day 2 of the event. On day 1, the Trojans defeated Shaw University and Winston-Salem State University.

Game 1 v. JCSU
The Trojans battle against the Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls was intense! At the top of the first inning, JCSU brought in 8 runners. VSU answered back with 4 runs as their lead off Ayannah Bowman and second in line
Dominique Mulero advanced home. A double to right field by
Amirah Chaney allowed
Tatyana Jordan and
Vanessa Ruby to cross home plate, rounding out the first inning.

The single run by the Golden Bulls at the top of the second gave VSU a chance to make magic on the field with 5 additional runs. Despite being hit by the pitcher,
Laricesa Miles managed to steal second base. Her teammate
Dominique Mulero would step up to bat, assisting the Trojans with a homerun to left field. Three batters later,
India Holmes smacked a homer to left field giving VSU 3 extra runs to tie the game 9-all.

JCSU could not find space to score at the top of the third inning, while
Samantha Cunningham took the opportunity to dart around the field at the bottom of the third to give the Trojans a 10-9 lead.
Laricesa Miles would soon advance home for the Trojans to bring the score to 11-9, in favor of VSU.

The game was called at the end of 3 inning due to a JCSU injury, which took the team down to eight players.

Pitcher
Kennedy Presson secured the win for the Trojans while Mulero and Holmes each racked in a homerun and 3 RBI's. Jordan and Chaney each collected 2 RBI's while Miles collected a single.

Game 2 v. FSU
After 7 innings, the Trojans took a 3-2 win over the Broncos of Fayetteville State. After a run by
Dominique Mulero at the top of the first inning, bringing the score to 1-0, the game remained scoreless until the bottom of the third inning where the Broncos collected 2 runs.

The fourth and fifth innings moved swiftly as neither team crossed home plate. VSU capitalized off of FSU's errors to bring in
Kennedy Presson and
India Holmes to give the Trojans a 3-2 lead.

VSU's defense stayed strong in the final inning to give the Trojans the 3-2 victory. Pitcher
Dominique Mulero is credited for the win while,
Samantha Cunningham and
Laricesa Miles each secured an RBI.

UP NEXT
The Trojans will take on Livingstone College at 9am and St. Augustine's University at 3pm on March 18 for the final day of the CIAA Roundup hosted by Elizabeth City Stated University in Elizabeth City, NC.
