Waymond Wright led the way for the Trojans with 13 points, five rebounds, and three assists. Trey Brown posted 12 points and three rebounds while Richard Granberry chipped in with 11 points and eight rebounds. Cyonte Melvin helped the Trojans with seven points.
The Trojans closed the first half to take a 23-22 lead into halftime. Virginia State shot 25 percent (7-of-28) in the first 20 minutes compared to 33 percent (8-of-24) for the Lions of Lincoln University. The Trojans also held a first half advantage on the glass, out-rebounding the Lions 8-2.
The Lions narrowed the Trojans lead to 31-30 on jumper by Gevon Arrington at the 13:52-minute mark of the second half. Over the next seven minutes the Trojans continued to grow its lead 48-38.
Cyonte Melvin (Hampton, Va.) secured a layup for Virginia State with 00:54 second left adding points to the board for the Trojans. Waymond Wright then added a point from the free throw line to add the last points of the contest. Deaquan Williams answered with adding a dunk for the Lions closing out the contest with a 60-52 score.
Virginia State shot 50 percent (16-of-32) in the final 20 minutes compared to 37 percent (11-of-29) for the Lions of Lincoln University.

Virginia State will host the Panthers of Virginia Union University for a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Northern division match-up on February 7 at the VSU Multipurpose Center. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
