VSU Trojan Basketball Set to Host Lincoln University

ETTRICK, Va. (February 22, 2018) – The Virginia State University men's and women's basketball teams will host the Lions of Lincoln University (LU) in its final regular season game of the season at the VSU Multipurpose Center, on Saturday, Feb. 24.The women's game will tipoff at 2 p.m., followed by the men's game at 4 p.m.

The Women's Game: The Trojans (21-4, 11-4 CIAA, 5-4 North) suffered a tough 56-68 loss to the Bulldogs of Bowie State University (BSU) at the A.C. Jordan Arena on Feb. 21.  Chrisanna Green led the Trojans with 18 points, nine rebounds and one steal. Alexis Smith finished with 13 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals. Mia Fitts chipped in with 11 points. Endia McKinney contributed 8 points, two assists and two steals while Dionna Marcus chipped in with 4 points.
 
The Lions women's basketball team (16-9, 10-5 CIAA, 5-4 North) rallied from a seven-point fourth quarter deficit to defeat Chowan University 71-68 on Feb. 21 in Murfreesboro, North Carolina. Teira Pendleton led four Lions in double figures with 18 points.  Shecquan Bailey had 13 points and grabbed nine rebounds while Ashley Paynes-Hightower also scored 13 points (6-8 FG) and grabbed eight rebounds.   Shahra Madison chipped in 11 points (5-8 FG) and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season.  Brianna Logan had four assists while Ariana Fleming equaled her career high with eight points and had a career-high four steals.

The Trojans collected a (76-71) victory over Lincoln University on the road on Feb. 3, 2018.
 
The Men's Game: The Trojans (22-3, 12-3 CIAA, 8-1 North) secured a 75-65 victory over the Bulldogs of Bowie State University (BSU) tonight at S.C. Jordan Arena on Feb. 21, claiming the CIAA Northern Division Title.  Philip Owens led the Trojans with 16 points and two assists on the evening. Cyonte Melvin was VSU's second leading scorer, ending the contest with 13 points, five rebounds, two assists and one steal. Walter Williams chipped in with 12 points, followed by William Vedder with 11 points. Waymond Wright and Andrew Corum chipped in with six points each.
 
LU's men (12-13, 7-8 CIAA, 4-5 North) rallied from a nine point deficit to defeat host Chowan University 87-81 in overtime on Feb. 21 in Murfreesboro, North Carolina. Cameron Campbell, led four Lions in double figures, pouring in a career-high 28 points on 10-22 shooting from the field.  The sophomore guard also led the team with four assists and four steals.  Gevon Arrington added 16 points and nine rebounds while Deaquan Williams notched a double-double with 12 points and ten boards.  Umar Saaba came off the bench and sank four three-point field goals, all in the first half.

The Trojans secured a (60-52) victory over Lincoln University on the road on Feb. 3, 2018.
 
The Festivities: These matchups not only mark the final regular season game, but the final home game for the Trojans of the men's and women's basketball team and the Woo Woo Cheerleading Squad. VSU Athletics will also be celebrating their alumni at the 2018 Alumni Winter Fest along with the 2018 VSU Hall and Wall of Fame Inductees and the VSUAA Varsity Club Humanitarian Award. The Trojans will also be honoring the men and women of the armed forces! February 24 will be an action packed day!
