Men's Basketball Secures Victory Over Elizabeth City State, 75-63

Box Score ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (February 17, 2018) – The nationally ranked Virginia State University Men's Basketball team secured a 75-63 victory over the Vikings of Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) this afternoon at the R.L. Vaughan Center.

Richard Granberry  led the way with a game high performance posting 19 points and eight rebounds. Cyonte Melvin finished with 12 points and four rebounds. Walter Williams chipped in with 10 points. Brandon Holley finished the contest with nine and one assist. Philip Owens and Waymond Wright chipped in with six points each. William Vedder secured five points, while Trey Brown and Andrew Corum helped the Trojans with four points each.  
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half:
Cyonte Melvin scored the opening basket to give the Trojans a 2-0 lead. Jermaine Brown secured a layup for ECSU to tie the game two all. Richard Granberry then added two from the free throw line to edge the Trojans 4-2 at the 18:03 mark. Granberry added a basket to grow VSU's lead 8-2 with 16:53 left in the half. Shyeid Petteway answers with adding a basket and one to give the Vikings a 9-8 lead at the 15:22 mark. Waymond Wright then adds a basket to return the lead 10-9 to the Trojans with 15:15 on the clock. The Viking held the lead until Brandon Holley secured a three pointer to give the VSU a 26-25 lead at the 5:05 mark. The Vikings regained the lead, 27-26, on a layup by Shyeid Petteway with 4:39 on the clock. VSU answer with a three pointer by Walter Williams to tie the game 31 all at the 2:44 mark. A three pointer by Philip Owens edged the Trojans 34-31 with 1:19 left. ECSU then added a basket and one to take a 36-34 lead. With 00:03 seconds left, Waymond Wright secured a basket to tie the game 36 all heading into the locker room.

Second Half:
Walter Williams scored the opening basket to give the Trojans a 38-36 lead at 19:36. Over the next four minutes the Trojans continued to add points to the board taking a 47-38 advantage at the 15:30 mark. The Trojans secured the lead and never turning it over the remainder of the game. A three pointer by Brandon Holley grew VSU's lead 56-41 with 11:32 left on the clock. From that point hot three point shooting helped the Trojans secure the 75-63 victory over Elizabeth City State. With the Trojans adding six three pointers in the second half. Virginia State finished the contest with shooting 50 percent (30-for-59) from the field overall, 47 percent (10-for-21) from 3-point range and 45 percent (17-for-27) from the free throw line.

VSU will travel to Bowie, MD to face the Bulldogs of Bowie State University on February 21 at the A.C. Jordan Arena. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
