th –ranked Virginia State University Men's Basketball team fell to the Bears of Shaw University (SU), 50-47, tonight at C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.

Andrew Corum led the way for the Trojans with nine points and 11 rebounds.
Cyonte Melvin and Lual Rahama chipped in with eight points each.
William Vedder posted seven points and five rebounds while
Waymond Wright and
Philip Owens each chipped in with five points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST HALF
The Bears of Shaw University started the contest with a 4-0 lead in the opening minutes. VSU's Wiliams Vedder scored the opening basket at the 18:32 mark. The Bears continued to add points to the board in the remaining minutes to clos the first half with a 28-19 advantage going into the locker room. Virginia State shot 26.1 percent (6-of-23) in the first 20 minutes compared to 36 percent (9-of-25) for Shaw University. The Trojans also held a huge first half advantage on the glass, out-rebounding the Bears 22-17. In fact, Virginia State pulled down eight offensive rebounds alone in the first half.
SECOND HALF
Virginia State managed to tie the game 34 all on a three-pointer by Lual Rahama at the 9:21 mark. The game was tied for the second time of the contest at the 4:22 mark. The Trojans then gained a two point lead over the next two minutes before the Bears tied the game for the third time, 42 all. The Bears then regained the lead on a pair of free throws to edge them, 44-42, at the 1:59 mark. A tip-in by
Richard Granberry kept the Trojans in the game with both teams score at 44 all sending the game into overtime.
OVERTIME
The Bears secured a lead in overtime on two free throws by Khaliq Williams making the score, 46-44. The Trojans answered with a jumper by
Waymond Wright to tie the game again, 46 all. A free throw by
Cyonte Melvin gave the Trojans a 47-46 edge over the Bears. The Bears then added a basket and two from the free throw line to pull away with a 50-47 victory.
The Bears leading scorer was DeAngelo Stephens-Bell, who led with 14 points, four rebounds, one assist and one steal.
UP NEXT
Virginia State will travel to Lincoln University, Pa. for a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Northern division match-up against Lincoln University on February 3 at Manuel Rivero Hall. Tip-off is slated for 4 p.m.
