#12 Virginia State Holds off Chowan, 64-61

Box Score MURFREESBORO, N.C. (January 20, 2018) – The 12th –ranked Virginia State University Men's Basketball team secured a 64-61 victory over the Hawks of Chowan University tonight at the Helms Center.

Senior Richard Granberry led the way for the Trojans posting 17 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore Andrew Corum finished with 1 2 points and seven rebounds while senior Trey Brown chipped in with 10 points, eight rebounds, two assists, and three steals. Senior Waymond Wright finished the contest with eight points, one rebound, three assists, and one steal. Junior Cyonte Melvin also helped the Trojans with seven points.  
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half:
Both teams battled for the lead in the opening minutes with the Trojans holding a 9-8 lead. Chowan had back-to-back threes to tie the contest at 14-all. VSU then answered back by opening up a 24-16 lead with a 10-2 run.
 
The Hawks continued to fight taking a 29-24 lead. Virginia State then bounced back by tying the contest with 28 seconds left in the half on a 5-0 run.  The Hawks then added two points from the free throw line to take a 31-29 lead. A three pointer by senior Philip Owens at the buzzer gave the Trojans a 32-21 lead at the intermission.
 
Second Half:
Virginia State came out the locker room going on a 9-0 run to put the Trojans up by double-figures, 41-31. The Trojans continued to grow their lead by 13 on several occasions.
 
The Hawks rallied and went on a 16-3 run to tie the contest at 56-all. VSU then netted four points over the next two minutes to grow the lead to 60-59. With 1:14 left in the contest, a three pointer by Andrew Corum put the Trojans up 63-59. A free throw by Waymond Wright with ten seconds left secured the 64-61 victory for VSU.
 
UP NEXT
Virginia State will host the Vikings of Elizabeth City State on January 24 at the VSU Multipurpose Center. Tip-off is slated for 7: 30 p.m.
