Box Score 2 ELIZABETH CITY, NC- The Virginia State University softball team split their CIAA northern division weekend with a double win over the Lady Vikings of Elizabeth City State University on April 9.
Rounding out the weekend with a 6-6 divisional record, the Trojans grasped a 10-0 win in game 1 against the Lady Vikings.
Leading the way for VSU was junior Ayannah Bowman with 3 runs. Juniors Maya Bailey and Tatyana Jordan each tallied 2 runs while senior Janay Joseph, sophomore Dominique Mulero and senior Marissa Hughes each chipped in a single run.
In the opening inning of the contest, the Trojans clinched 4 runs. Despite a quick 3 outs in the 2nd inning, VSU picked up an additional 3 runs in the 3rd and 4th innings combined. The 5th and 6th inning did not rule in favor of the Trojans, while the 7th inning moved 3 runners across home plate.
Earning the win on the mound for VSU was Dominique Mulero, handing over 8 strikeouts.
The mercy rule came into effect during game 2, as VSU undoubtedly secured a 17-1 win.
Bowman and senior Laricesa Miles took charge of the game with 4 runs each. Bailey and Mulero collected 3 runs, while sophomore Kye-Neisha Logan advanced home twice. Chipping in a single run for the Trojans was rookie Vanessa Ruby.
Despite the lone run ECSU secured at the bottom of the 2nd inning, VSU collected their 17 runs in the first 4 innings.
On the mound for the Trojans was junior Veronica Ruby with 6 strikeouts.
Taking time to practice and regroup, VSU will return to action on April 20 for a single contest against Southside Virginia Community College. The first pitch is set for 4:30pm at the VSU Softball Field.
