Box Score RICHMOND, VA- The Virginia State University Trojan softball team faced the Lady Panthers of Virginia Union University on April 30 for a makeup contest. The Trojans fell to the Lady Panthers with a final score of 7-5.
The teams had already played 3 innings before inclement weather stopped the game on April 22. Senior Janay Joseph gave the Trojans a run at the top of the 2nd inning. VUU quickly answered back in the same inning with 5 runs.
Picking up where they left off with a score of 5-1, both teams were scoreless in the 4th inning. At the top of the 5th, junior Ayannah Bowman hit a sacrifice fly out to second base, advancing senior Laricesa Miles home. The Lady Panthers once again answered back with a single run at the bottom of the 5th. As the Trojans were unable to gain a run at the top of the 6th, VUU extended their lead with an additional run at the bottom of the 6th.
The Trojans shifted their game into another gear in the 7th inning. Capitalized on an error, rookie Vanessa Ruby was able to advance home. During the next play, senior Marissa Hughes crossed home plate after a wild pitch from VUU. Bowman stepped up with another sacrifice fly, advancing junior Maya Bailey home. Despite the 3 added runs, the Trojans momentum was cut short, giving them the 7-5 loss.
VSU will redirect their focus to the 2017 CIAA Softball Championships on May 4-6 in Petersburg, VA and on the campus of VSU.
