Box Score ETTRICK, VA - The Virginia State University softball team fell to the Lady Bulldogs of Bowie State on Saturday afternoon, 8-9 and 13-7 in the final regular season home game.
It was also senior day with six Trojans honored. Senior's Maya Bailey, Marissa Hughes, Laricesa Miles, Janay Joseph, DeMone' Brickhouse and Rebecca Elder were honored between the two games for their hard work and commitment to the athletics department and to the softball program.Â
Virginia State moves to 12-20 on the season, 7-8 in the CIAA.
In the first game, Bowie State jumped to a 6-0 lead after the first two innings of the competition. VSU answered in the bottom of the fourth inning, with the Trojans capitalizing on errors by the Lady Bulldogs with adding five runs. Cutting the Lady Bulldogs lead to 6-5. VSU added its final run of the game in the fifth inning with freshman Vanessa Ruby singling to center field, bringing senior Demone Brickhouse across home plate, recording an RBI. The Lady Bulldogs added two runs in the top of the seventh inning, securing an 8-6 victory. Both the Trojans and Lady Bulldogs finished the game with a total of 11 hits.
The second game started with the same momentum for the Lady Bulldogs with securing a 7-0 lead in the first two innings. In the top of the fourth inning the Lady Bulldogs added two runs to bring the lead to 9-0. The Trojans answered with adding its first run on an error in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Trojans continued to rally with senior Laricesa Miles single, brining Elder across home plate, recording an RBI. Followed by Veronica Ruby's double to left field, bringing Miles and Vanessa Ruby home, recording 2 RBIs. At the end of the fifth inning the Trojans cut the Bulldogs lead to 10-4. The Trojans added an addition two runs in the remaining two innings of the game to finish with a total of seven runs. The Lady Bulldogs added an addition three runs in the remaining two innings to secure the 13-7 victory. The Trojans finished the game with 6 strikeouts and six walks.
Up next the Trojans will face the Lady Panthers of Virginia Union University on Sunday, April 30 at 11 am at the VUU softball field.
