Box Score RICHMOND, VA- The Virginia State University softball team defeated the Lady Panthers of Virginia Union University on April 22, with a final score of 10-6. The originally scheduled doubleheader matchup was adjusted to a single contest due to inclement weather.
Rookie Vanessa Ruby, sophomore Dominique Mulero and senior DeMone Brickhouse took charge of the game for the Trojans with two runs each. Also crossing home plate were senior Janay Joseph, junior Tatyana Jordan, junior Rebecca Elder and senior Laricesa Miles.
Despite both teams being scoreless in the first inning, Elder set the tone for the Trojans at the top of the 2nd inning with a home run, earning her 2 RBI's.
Battling for the lead, the score was tied 3-3 at the end of four innings. Jumping ahead with 2 runs in the 5th inning and a single run at the top of the 6th inning, VSU began to pull away from their rivals. At the bottom of the 6th inning VUU answered back with a homerun; but with no runners on base, the Trojans had a 6-4 lead.
VSU gained momentum in the 7th inning, securing 4 runs. Although the Lady Panthers secured a homer and an additional run, the Trojans defense stopped VUU with a ground out to first base to end the game.
The Trojans 10-6 victory over VUU is the team's 7th conference win of the season.
On April 29, VSU will face the Bulldogs of Bowie State University for a makeup doubleheader contest. The first pitch of the Trojans Senior Day game is set for 1pm at the VSU Softball Field.
