Box Score 2 CHARLOTTE, NC – The Virginia State University softball team went 1-1 on the first day of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Conference Round-Up Friday afternoon at Nevin Community Park. The Trojans defeated Livingstone College 17-1 in five innings before dropping 9-1 decision to the Rams of Winston-Salem State University.
Taking on the Lady Blue Bears, the Trojans were powered by junior
Tatyana Jordan (Chesterfield, VA) who went 4-for-4 at the plate, including three RBI's, one double and two runs scored.
Virginia State (3-13, 1-1 CIAA) secured an early 9-0 lead in the first two innings of the game which helped them coast to a victory. The Trojans when added 8 more runs in the remaining innings. VSU's defense made it tough for LC (1-2, 0-1 CIAA) to add many runs, the Lady Blue Bears only added one run in the third inning of the competition.
Junior
Veronica Ruby (Spotsylvania, VA) earned the win on the mound, allowing five hits, one run and striking out seven in four innings of work.
Heading into game two of the day, Winston-Salem State secured a 3-0 lead in the first inning of the competition. The Trojans tried to rally back to cut the lead with adding one run in the third inning. Hot hitting by the Rams allowed them to add five more runs in the four remaining innings of the game.
Dominique Mulero completed the competition on the mound for Virginia State. She allowed three hits, nine run and walked seven.
The Trojans will return to action Saturday, Mar. 18 versus the Lady Bears of Shaw University at 11 a.m. on Field 4 and will end the day versus the Broncos of Fayetteville State University at 1 p.m.
Sunday, VSU will go head-to-head with Johnson C. Smith University at 12 p.m. before wrapping up the round-up with a match up against St. Augustine's University at 2 p.m.
