Box Score Bluefield, W.Va. (November 28, 2017) – The Trojans of Virginia State University crushed the Blues of Bluefield State College, 86-55, at the Ned E. Shott Physical Education Building tonight. With the victory the Trojans remain undefeated with a 6-0 record, while Bluefield State College moves to a 2-3 record.
The Trojans, scoring the opening basket of the game, dominated the first half of the contest building a 42-22 lead going into halftime. Bluefield State College tried to rally, but could never cut the Trojans lead in the opening frame.
Richard Granberry (Chester, Pa.) led the way offensively for the Trojans in the half, shooting 4-for-7 from the field and 2-for-2 from the free throw line. Granberry finished the contest with 12 points and five rebounds.
The Trojans' domination on both offense and defense continued into the second half, as they continued to extend their lead in the second half. Andrew Corum hauled in eight defensive rebounds in the winning effort.
Brandon Holley added 18 points and three total rebounds, while newcomer Lual Daniel Rahama went for 12 points on 4-of-4 shots while posting four rebounds of his own. Senior guard Trey Brown (8), Walter Williams (8) and James Smith (8) all added eight points respectively.
Virginia State's offense remained consistent in the second half, as 12 players scored at least one point on the night. The Trojans added 44 points in the second half to win the game, shooting 73.3 percent from the 3-point line for the night.
Greg Purnell led Bluefield State College with 10 points, including two three-pointer, followed by Antonio Watson and Chris Melton who both contributing eight points.
WITH THE WIN: The Trojans improved to a 6-0 record and remain undefeated as they return home for their next home contest at the VSU Multipurpose Center.
UP NEXT: The Trojans will host Wheeling Jesuit University on Tuesday, December 12, 2017 at the VSU Multipurpose Center. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m.
