Volleyball Advances to CIAA Semifinals After Securing Victory Over Fayetteville State

Ettrick, Va. (November 17, 2017) - The Virginia State University Trojan volleyball team took down the Broncos of Fayetteville State University in five sets (25-21, 23-25, 25-13, 20-25,15-13) to advance to the semifinals of the CIAA Volleyball Championship. The Trojans will take on the Bears of Shaw University for a semifinal matchup at 7pm on November 18.

 

Junior Myia Jones dominated the court for the Trojans with 18 kills. Junior All-CIAA Second Team pick Tiara Ramey collected 14 kills, while CIAA All- Rookie team pick, Jailyn Ivey tallied 11 kills. Junior Hailey Heyward rounded out the double digit kills for VSU with 10. Tag teaming the assists for the Trojans was rookie Bria Anderson with 25 assists and senior All-CIAA Second Team pick Miranda Bass with 23 assists.

 

Despite the Broncos taking an early 9-6 lead in set one, the Trojans shifted gears to collected seven consecutive points for a 13-9 lead. The Broncos attempted to close the scoring gap, but the Trojans picked apart their defense. VSU remained focused to secure the 25-21 set one victory.

 

Both teams went point for point in set two, tying the score nine times. VSU held the lead for majority of the set, until FSU tied the game 22-22. Although the Trojans gained an additional point, two errors and a kill ruled in favor of the Broncos gave them a 25-23 set two score.

 

After a quick pep talk by head coach Amanda Walker, the Trojan undoubtedly controlled set three. A Broncos error jump started the Trojans extensive lead. The lucky number in set three was 12, as that was the largest lead of set which was obtained on three different occasions. The last 12 point lead sealed the deal in favor of the Trojans in set three with a score of 25-13.

 

FSU controlled set four by holding a strong lead. Although the Trojans grasped six consecutive points as the set progressed, it was not enough to take set four. The scoreboard ruled in favor of FSU, 25-20.

 

In the deciding set, both teams battled for the lead. The set was knotted at 13-13 after continuously exchanging set points. FSU delivered a missed serve, allowing VSU a chance to pull ahead 14-13. The Trojans defense stood strong with an assist block by Myia Jones and Bria Anderson to give VSU the 15-13 set five win and the match victory.

 

The Trojans overpowered the Broncos in kills (60-41), attacks (150-147), assists (55-36), digs (63-54), and points (77-49).

 

VSU will return to the court tomorrow (November 18) for the semifinals of the CIAA Volleyball Championships. The Trojans will face the Bears of Shaw University for a 7pm serve.
