Box Score Ettrick, VA- The Virginia State University men's basketball team improved to an eleven game winning streak after defeating the Lions of Lincoln University 72-67 on January 28.
The Trojans improve to a 17-3 overall record, 9-1 in the CIAA.
Tonight's contest celebrated senior Elijah Moore reaching 1,000 career points this week on the road in Bowie, Md.
Senior Elijah Moore and junior Brice Rowe led the charge for the Trojans offensively, each securing 18 points. Junior Richard Granberry followed up recording 12 points and leading the defensive effort with 10 rebounds for a double-double. Sophomore Walter Williams rounded out the double-digit scoring for the Trojans with 10 points.
The Lions were offensively led by Khayyir Laws, who recorded 21 points. Umma Saaba and Carlton Allen led the LU defensive effort with 5 rebounds each.
Senior Elijah Moore initiated the scoring for the Trojans, hitting a three pointer to put the Trojans on the scoreboard first. Sophomore Walter Williams knocked down a three on the next VSU possession, and moments later Moore made another three pointer to lead LU 9-2. VSU had the hot hand from three point range in the first half shooting 60% from behind the arc.
The Trojans took control of the game early and were able to create a scoring gap after Rowe knocked down two consecutive three pointers giving the Trojans a 16-6 edge over the Lions. With 2:02 remaining in the first half Moore delivered an explosive dunk off of Rowe's missed three pointer establishing a 30-13 lead over the Lions. At the half VSU lead LU 32 – 17.
In the early minutes of the second half the Trojans would see their largest lead of the night up by 23 points after back to back baskets by Granberry. The Lions continued to fight back and were able to chip away at the VSU lead going on a 19-2 run midway through the second half. Sean James made a three pointer with 29 seconds remaining in the game to bring the Lions within three points (65-68). With the game clock expiring the Lions fouled the Trojans on their final two possessions. Marcus James and Trey Brown made their free throws and the Trojans held on to the lead to keep their winning streak alive.
The Trojans out scored the Lions 39-28. VSU scored 18 second chance points, while the Lions scored 6.Â
VSU ended the night shooting 41.2% (21-51) from the field, 31.6% (6-19) from behind the arc, and 70.6% (24-34) at the line, while LU ended the game shooting 41.3% (19-46) from the field, 75% (3-4) from behind the arc, and 74.3% (26-35) at the line.
VSU will continue to work hard to prepare for the 2017 CIAA Basketball Tournament on February 20-25 in Charlotte. NC.
