Box Score ELIZABETH CITY, NC- After defeating the Elizabeth City State University Vikings on January 21 with a final score of 77-71, the Virginia State University men's basketball secured their 9th consecutive win. The win improves the Trojans to an overall record of 15-3, 7-1 in the conference.
VSU made the victory a team effort, with 4 Trojans scoring in the double digits. Junior Trey Brown led the team with 19 points, followed by senior Elijah Moore with 17 points. Senior Richard Granberry tallied 15 points while junior Waymond Wright rounded out the double digit scoring with 12 points. Granberry stepped in leading the Trojans recoveries with 7 rebounds.
The ECSU Vikings were led by Clayton Cowell and Elon Edwards with 14 points and John Manner and Javonte Miles with 6 rebounds each. The loss set the team back to a 1-14 overall record, 0-7 in the conference.
VSU had a slow run in the first half. After much needed shots to tip-off the game, VSU trailed the Vikings for majority of the half. The Trojans went into halftime trailing, 41-30.
After a pep talk in the locker room, VSU came out prepared to take control of the court and the game. With 15:26 Moore helped VSU tie the game 45-all. Toggling back and forth, Brown's 3 point play moved the Trojans ahead to hold a strong lead. VSU rounded out the night with 77-71 win.
The Trojans dominated the Vikings with points off turnovers (23-8) and points in the paint (32-18).
VSU ended the matchup shooting 45.8 percent (27-59) from the field, 50.0 percent (7-14) from behind the arc, and 64.0 percent (16-25) at the line, while ECSU ended the game shooting 50.0 percent (26-52) from the field, 50.0 percent (10-20) from behind the arc, and 81.8 percent (9-11) at the line.
The Trojans will take on the Bulldogs of Bowie State University on January 25. Tip-off is set for 7:30pm in Bowie, MD.
VSU will continue to work hard to prepare for the 2017 CIAA Basketball Tournament on February 20-25 in Charlotte. NC.
