Box Score 2 SHIPPENSBURG, Pa.- The Virginia State University volleyball team hit the road for their second consecutive tournament of the 2016 season. After securing 3 wins during the VSU/VUU Tournament on September 3-4, the Trojans traveled to Shippensburg, PA for the September 9-10 Raiders Tournament.
On day 1, the Trojans faced UVA-Wise and Shephard University. Â VSU outlasted UVA- Wise in a competitive 5 set match, but fell short in game 2 to Shephard, 3-1.
In the match up against UVA-Wise, both teams toggled with the set wins. UVA-Wise took set 1, 25-18, but the Trojans stepped in with a 25-19 set 2 win after numerous errors on UVA-Wise. The Wise Cavaliers soon answered back with a 25-19 set 3 win. The fight continued in set 4 as the scoring gap remained close. With a score of 19-19, VSU kicked it into high gear and took the 25-22 set 4 win. The deciding set undoubtable belonged to VSU as they finished victorious with a score of 15-7.
Sophomore
Tiara Ramey led the Trojans with 11 kills while junior
Miranda Bass chipped in 18 assists.
In game 2, Senior
Alexsys Pullen lead match with 14 kills while Ramey tied with Shepherd's Christine Jackson with 12 kills.
The Trojans fought hard, keeping the scoring margin low. After taking a 25-23 set 1 loss, VSU bounced back in set 2 with a 26-24 win. Consistently fighting for the lead, the set was tied 24-24. With the ball in their court, the Trojans capitalized off of an error by Shephard to gain the lead. A kill by Ramey sealed the set 2 win. Although VSU battled hard in set 3 (25-22) and set 4 (26-24), they were not able to take the win.
Going into day 2 of the Raiders Tournament, the Trojans will take on Philadelphia University and the host Shippensburg University on September 10.
