RALEIGH, NC- The Virginia State University softball team split the CIAA Championship Semi-Finals on April 29 at the at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex.
In game 1, The Trojans faced the Fayetteville State University Lady Broncos for the second time during the CIAA post season. During the quarterfinals, the Trojans fell to the Lady Broncos 7-5, but VSU redeemed themselves against FSU in the semifinals with a final score of 3-2.
Junior DeMone Brickhouse (Southampton, VA), senior
Lindsey Wilkins (Nelson, VA) and junior
Laricesa Miles (Emporia, VA) each gave the Trojans a run.
Both teams secured a run during the first inning, tying the game 1-1. The 2
nd – 4
th innings were scoreless as both teams fought to advance home. At the top of the 5
th inning, Miles scored, but the Lady Broncos answered back to retie the game, 2-2. The crowd was at the edge of their seats as the 6
th inning blew by without a run from either team. The Trojans stood strong as Wilkins scored the las run of the game at the top of the 7
th inning, giving VSU the 3-2 win.
The Trojans had a few minutes to rest before they returned to the field to face the Hawks of Chowan University for game 2.
Senior
Verlisha Brandon (Halifax, VA), senior
Mckenzie Love (Shippensburg, PA) and Miles each secured a run for the Trojans in game 2.
The Hawks took an early 4-0 lead, but VSU was able to gain 2 runs at the top of the 3
rd inning. Chowan answered back with 2 runs at the bottom of the same, bring the score to 6-2. VSU would gain their final run of the game to the top of the 4
th inning.
At the conclusion of 7 innings, the Trojans took a 7-3 loss to the Hawks.
VSU wraps up their season with a 14-22 overall record.
This season the team had 2 student-athletes to earn a spot on the All-CIAA conference team, sophomore centerfielder
Tatyana Jordan (Chesterfield, VA) and rookie
Amirah Chaney (Passaic, NJ).
