Box Score 2 ETTRICK, Va.- The Virginia State University softball team split their senor day doubleheader with the Panthers of Virginia Union University on April 23.
Seniors
Verlisha Brandon (Halifax, VA),
Lindsey Wilkins (Nelson, VA),
Mckenzie Love (Shippensburg, PA),
Briana Pierce (Halifax, VA),
Cameryn Smith (Powhatan, VA) and
Alexandra King (Annandale, VA) played their last collegiate game on the VSU Softball Field.
VSU secured game 1 with a final score of 6-5.
After a scoreless 1
st inning, the Panthers earned 2 runs at the top of the 2
nd. Junior
Marissa Hughes (Upper Marlboro, MD) and sophomore
Maya Bailey (Chesterfield, VA) answered back, each securing a single run, tying the game 2-2. The 3
rd inning mimicked the 1
st, with no earned runs. VUU dominated the 4
th inning, clinching 3 runs, bringing the score to 5-2. The Trojans rallied back in the 5
th inning with runs by junior
Laricesa Miles (Emporia, VA), Love and Pierce. The game remained tied 5-5 through the 6
th inning. VUU struck out at the top of the 7
th inning keeping the score tied. After 2 outs at the bottom of the 7
th, Love was next to bat. Smacking the ball to centerfield, Love did not look back, clinching an infield home run to win the game.
The Trojans fell short in game 2, with a 10-4 loss.
Wilkins scored at the bottom of the 2
nd inning, bring the score to 5-1. Bailey, Pierce and sophomore
Tatyana Jordan (Chesterfield, VA) each tallied a run closing the 5-4 scoring gap. The Panthers gained 5 additional runs to split the doubleheader.
VSU will travel to Charlotte, NC on April 28-30 for the 2016 CIAA Championship.
