Softball Splits On Final Day of Shaw Challenge

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Raleigh, NC- The VSU Trojan softball team split on the final day of the Shaw Challenge on March 6. In game 1 the Trojans fell to Georgia College and State, 10-2 and secured their first win of the season in a conference matchup over Virginia Union in game 2, 12-9.

In game 1, VSU allowed Georgia College and State to secure 10 runs.

Senior Krysten Davis (Chesterfield, VA) and junior Janay Joseph (Eastern Shore, VA) gave the Trojans their only runs of the game. Despite their efforts with the 2 runs at the bottom of the 6th inning, VSU took the 10-2 loss.

In game 2 against VUU, the Trojans stayed alive, taking the contest into 8 innings.

Seniors Camryn Smith (Powhatan, VA) and Mckenzie Love (Shippensburg, PA), and juniors DeMone Brickhouse (Southhampton, VA) and Janay Joseph (Eastern Shore, VA) each collected 2 RBI's. Senior Krysten Davis (Chesterfield, VA), sophomore India Holmes (Ruther Glen, VA) and rookie Dominique Mulero (Chatham, VA) each collected a single RBI.

Smith and senior Lindsey Wilkins (Nelson, VA) led the Trojans with 3 runs while Holmes, Mulero, Brickhouse, junior Briana Pierce (Halifax, VA), sophomore Tatyana Jordan (Chesterfield, VA) and junior Marissa Hughes (Upper Marlboro, MD) each gave VSU a single run.

After the VUU Panthers got on the board with 4 runs at the bottom of the first inning, the Trojans worked to answer back. VSU was able to secured 3 runs in the 2nd and 5th inning, but the Panthers would respond with a run each time they were up to bat.

At the top of the 7th inning, a fielding error at second base gave Brickhouse and Hughes a chance to run home, tying up the game 8-8. VUU was not able to perform under pressure, sending the game into 8 innings. VSU was able to bring in 4 runners at the top of the 8th and only allow the Panther to run in one player, giving VSU the 12-9 conference win.

VSU will take to the field on Friday, March 11 to face East Stroudsburg in a doubleheader game beginning at 1pm at the VSU Softball Field.
