Box Score 2 RICHMOND, Va.- The VSU Trojans softball team split a doubleheader matchup of with the Panthers of Virginia Union University on March 26.
The matchups move the Trojans to a 10-14 overall record.
In game 1, VSU fell to the Panthers in a close 9-8 game.
Sophomore
Tatyana Jordan (Chesterfield, VA), senior
Lindsey Wilkins (Nelson, VA), and senior
Cameryn Smith (Powhatan, VA) each clinched a homerun for the Trojans. Jordan and Smith led the team with 2 runs each while, junior
Laricesa Miles (Emporia, VA), senior
Verlisha Brandon (Halifax, VA), and senior
Krysten Davis (Chesterfield, VA) each chipped in a single run.
VSU allowed the Panthers to jump ahead by scoring in the 2
nd and 3
rd inning, but a homer by Jordan gave VSU their much needed boost. At the bottom of 4
th inning, the Trojans trailed VUU, 5-4. A homer by Smith at the top of the 5
th gave VSU 3 additional runs to take the lead. VUU answered back with 4 runs at the bottom of the 6
th inning, taking a 9-7 lead. Despite a homerun by Wilkins at the top of the 7
th, it was enough to take the win, falling 9-8.
The Trojans prevailed in a close 5-4 game 2 matchup with the Panthers.
VUU secured the first 2 runs of the game at the bottom of the 1
st inning. After a scoreless 2
nd inning for both teams, VSU took a 4-2 lead at the top of the 3
rd inning by bring home Jordan, sophomore
Rebecca Elder (Chesterfield, VA), sophomore
Janay Joseph (Eastern Shore, VA), and junior Maya Baily (Chesterfield, VA). The Panthers answered back with 2 runs at the bottom of the 3
rd inning to tie the game 4-4. Elder started the 4
th inning off with a homerun to give VSU a 5-4 lead. Innings 5-7 moved fast as VSU held strong to their win.
VSU will be on the road on March 9 to take in the Bowie State University Bulldogs in a doubleheader matchup. The first pitch is set for 12pm.
