Box Score 2 RALIEGH, NC – The VSU Trojan softball team prevailed in 2 conference games on the final day of the CIAA Roundup hosted by Shaw University. In game 1, VSU thrashed the Livingstone Blue Bears, 14-0, and took down the Falcons of St. Augustine's with a final score of 13-2.
The Trojans didn't waste any time in game 1, collecting 7 runs in the first inning. Putting VSU on the board were sophomore
Maya Bailey (Chesterfield, VA), junior
Marissa Hughes (Upper Marlboro, MD), sophomore
Tatyana Jordan (Chesterfield, VA), senior Camryn Smith (Powhatan, VA), senior
Lindsey Wilkins (Nelson, VA), senior
Verlisha Brandon (Halifax, VA), and sophomore
Janay Joseph (Eastern Shore, VA).
The Blue Bears attempted to score at the top of the 2
nd inning, but VSU held them down. At the bottom the same, the Trojans collected 3 additional runs, bringing in sophomore
Rebecca Elder (Chesterfield, VA), rookie
Amirah Chaney (Passaic, NJ) and sophomore
Mikela Dockery (Chicago, IL).
Neither team scored for the remained of the game, putting the 5 inning mercy rule into effect. The Trojans took the 10-0 win.
In game 2, Smith, Brandon and senior
Krysten Davis (Chesterfield, VA) collected 2 runs each. Hughes, Jordan, Wilkins, Joseph, Pierce, junior
Laricesa Miles (Emporia, VA) and junior DeMone Brickhouse (Southhampton, VA) each chipped in a single run.
VSU and SAU were equally match in the 1
st inning with 1 run each. At the top of the 2
nd inning, the Trojans picked up the pace collecting 3 runs, while the Falcons would grasp their final run of the game. A scoreless 3
rd inning gave VSU a boost to collect 6 runs at the top of the 4
th. The Trojans added on 3 more runs at the top of the 5
th inning, before putting the 10-run rule into effect, taking the 13-2 win.
The Trojans will return home to take on Bluefield State on Tuesday, March 22 at 3pm for a doubleheader matchup.
