Box Score 2 RALIEGH, NC- The Virginia State University softball team split day 1 of the CIAA Roundup with a 11-1 win over the host Shaw University and a 8-2 fall to Winston-Salem State.
The Trojans move to a 3-11 overall record, 2-1 in the conference.
In game one, the Trojans put the 10-run rule to work as they held the Bears down to a single run at the top of the 4
th inning.
VSU started the game off strong with 8 runs at the bottom of the 1
st inning. Junior
Marissa Hughes (Upper Marlboro, MD) lead the game for the Trojans, securing 2 runs in the opening inning. Bringing in a single run for the Trojans in the 1
st inning were, junior
Laricesa Miles (Emporia, VA), sophomore
Tatyana Jordan (Chesterfield, VA), senior
Lindsey Wilkins (Nelson, VA), senior
Verlisha Brandon (Halifax, VA), junior DeMone Brickhouse (Southhampton, VA), and senior Camryn Smith (Powhatan, VA).
While neither team scored in the 2
nd or 3
rd inning, Shaw attempted to close the scoring gap with a run at the top of the 4
th. VSU answered back bringing home senior
Alexandra King (Annandale, VA), rookie
Dominique Mulero (Chatham, VA), and sophomore
Rebecca Elder (Chesterfield, VA) to give the Trojans an 11-1 lead.
VSU handed the Bears 3 quick outs at the top of the 5
th inning to seal the win.
In game 2, VSU was only able to bring home Jordan and Wilkins to secure their 2 runs over the Lady Rams.
The Trojans fought hard, but a homer in the 4
th inning by WSSU, set VSU back 4 runs.
After 7 innings, VSU fell to the Lady Rams with a final score of 8-2.
VSU will take on Fayetteville State at 2pm and Johnson C. Smith at 4:30pm for Day 2 of the CIAA Roundup on March 19 in Raleigh, NC. All game will be played at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex.
