Box Score ETTRICK, Va.- - The Virginia State University men's basketball team suffered a tough loss against the Vikings of Elizabeth City State University on Feburay 8 with a final score of 64 - 61.
The loss pushed the Trojans to a 16 - 5 record on the season, 10 - 2 in the CIAA.
The Trojans were offensively led by junior guard
Kevin Williams (Franklinton, NC) who recorded 15 points. Junior forward
Elijah Moore (Yorktown, VA) followed up with 12 points and senior center
Te'Quan Alers (Fredericksburg, VA) rounded out the double digit scoring for the Trojans with 10 points. Moore also fueled the Trojans defensive effort, recording 7 rebounds.
VSU led by 1 point with 17:44 remaining in the first half, but the Vikings would regain the lead and maintain possession of the lead until halftime. Despite the Vikings seizing their largest lead of the game a 10 point scoring gap with 7:43 remaining in 1st half, VSU fought back and only trailed the Vikings 34-29 at halftime.
VSU opened up the second half energized and a layup by Moore with 17:52 left in the game initiated a 15-0 run and gave the Trojans a 6 point lead.
The Trojans and the Vikings found themselves knotted up four times as the second half progressed, but a quick layup and 2 foul shots by ECSU with 13 seconds left in the game gave the Vikings a 3 point lead and eventually the game.
VSU ended the night shooting 49.4 percent (23-57) from the field, 21.7 percent (5-23) from behind the arc, and 66.7 percent (8-12) from the line.
The Trojans will be back in action on Wednesday, February 10 at 7:30 PM to host Chowan University.
The contest will also serve as VSU's Think Pink/ Sock it to the Hawks/ VA Lottery Game night. The Virginia State Department of Athletics annual 1,000 cans, 1 goal campaign initiative is underway. The canned food items collected will be donated to the local food banks. The Department encourages all fans, alumni, faculty and friends to bring a canned food item to all of the home basketball games this season.
