Box Score ELIZABETH CITY, NC.- The Virginia State University men's basketball team secured a 74-59 win over the Elizabeth City State University Vikings on February 13.
The win advances VSU to an 18-5 overall record, 12-2 in the conference. The Vikings fall to a 9-12 overall record, 6-8 in the CIAA.
VSU ended the night shooting 49.1 percent (28-57) from the field, 47.4 percent (9-19) from behind the arc and 75.0 percent (9-12) from the free throw line.
Rookie
Cyonte Melvin (Hampton, VA) took control of the game for the Trojans, collecting 14 points. Sophomore
Waymond Wright (Raleigh, NC) tallied 13 points while senior
Javon Moore (Fairfax, VA) secured 11 points. Junior
Melvin Gregory rounded out the double digit scoring with 10 points.
The CIAA Northern Division teams fought for the lead at the beginning of the first half. A shot from behind the arc by
Cyonte Melvin gave the Trojans the necessary drive to hold the lead. As the clock ran down, the Vikings bounced back to tie the game 36-36 at halftime.
After multiple turnovers at the beginning of the second half, VSU's junior
Kevin Williams (Franklinton, NC) gain possession and landed a 3 pointer to break the tie. The Trojans kept the momentum for the remainder of the half to take the 74-59 victory.
The Trojans will travel to Bowie, MD on Wednesday, February 17 to take on the Bowie State University Bulldogs. Tipoff is set for 7:30pm.
The Virginia State Department of Athletics annual 1,000 cans, 1 goal campaign initiative is underway. The canned food items collected will be donated to the local food banks. The Department encourages all fans, alumni, faculty and friends to bring a canned food item to all of the home basketball games this season.
