Box Score ETTRICK, Va.- The Virginia State University Trojans men's basketball team overpowered the Livingstone College Blue Bears in an 87 - 79 victory on January 9.
The contest was noted to be the CIAA Game of the Week, televised by Aspire TV and Urban Sports and Entertainment.
VSU moves to a 10-3 overall record and maintains an unblemished 5-0 conference record.
Rookie guard
Walter Williams (Richmond, VA) led the Trojans with 16 points while junior guard and All-CIAA Preseason Pick
Elijah Moore (Yorktown, VA) followed up with 15 points. Junior guard
Kevin Williams (Franklinton, NC) recorded 14 points, senior guard
Javon Moore (Fairfax, VA) tallied 12 points, and rookie guard
Cyonte Melvin (Hampton, VA) rounded out the double-digit scoring for the Trojans with 10 points.
VSU shot 34.3 (12-35) percent from the field, 41.7 percent (5-12) from behind the arc, and 66.7 percent (12-18) from the line in the first half.
The Trojans and the Blue Bears exchanged leads throughout the first half as both teams played with high intensity. In the final seconds of the first half the Trojans took advantage of a trip to the line after a Blue Bears technical foul to cut their deficit to 1 point. Following the foul, K. Williams drove to the basket to give the Trojans a 41 - 40 lead over the Bears heading into halftime.
VSU maintained their lead over Livingstone the entire second half. The Blue Bears fought back and chipped away at a 16 point Trojan lead to bring them within 7 points with 3:19 remaining in the game. A basket by Melvin with 1:42 left in the game reinstated VSU's double-digit lead.
The Trojan took advantage of turnovers and bench points to fuel them to victory.
VSU ended the night shooting 43.8 percent (28-64) from the field, 45.5 percent (10-22) from behind the arc, and 63.6 percent (21-33) from the line.
The Trojans will be back in action on Tuesday, January 12 in Daniel Gymnasium as they take on Johnson C. Smith University at 7:30 PM.
The Virginia State Department of Athletics annual 1,000 cans, 1 goal campaign initiative is underway. The canned food items collected will be donated to the local food banks. The Department encourages all fans, alumni, faculty and friends to bring a canned food item to all of the home basketball games this season.
