Trojans Clinch 84-75 Win Over Rams

Box Score ETTRICK, Va.- The VSU Trojans men's basketball team began 2016 in the right direction after clinching a 84-75 win over the Winston-Salem State University Rams on January 7.

VSU advances to 9-3 overall record and remains undefeated in conference play while the WSSU falls to a 6-7 overall record, 0-2 in the conference.

VSU shot 50.0 percent (30-60) from the field, 37.5 percent (6-16) from behind the arc and 69.2 percent (18-26) from the free throw line.

Junior and All-CIAA Preseason pick Elijah Moore (Yorktown, VA) controlled the game in scoring with 21 points. Sophomore Waymond Wright (Raleigh, NC) rounded out the double digit scoring for the Trojans with 17 points.

The Trojans set the tone in the first half with back-to-back 3 pointers by junior Melvin Gregory (Weems, VA). Fellow Trojan, junior Kevin Williams, immediate followed suite with a shot from behind the arc bring the score to 9-0. VSU kept a steady pace on the court until the Rams bounded back and snatched the lead with a, 29-28, with 3:30 left in the half. The battle for the lead kept the Trojan fans on their feet. Wright secured the final basket of the half, but the Trojans were unsuccessful in taking the lead. VSU went into halftime trailing, 39-38.

The second half was full of dazzling plays and a fight for the lead. With 11:22 left in the game, the Trojans trailed by 3 points. After a jumper by Moore and a secured free throw by senior Te'Quan Alers (Fredericksburg, VA), the Trojans stole the lead, 57-56, and never looked back. Several timeouts and fouls in the final minutes of the game, left the crowd on the edge of their seats as the Trojans held on to their lead. At the final buzzer, the Trojans secured an 84-75 victory.

VSU secured their win by outscoring WSSU in points off of turnovers, bench points, baskets in the paint and fast break points.

The Trojans will take the court of Daniel Gymnasium on Saturday, January 9 to face the Blue Bears of Livingstone College. Tip-off is set for 4pm. The Take a Kid to the Game event against the Blue Bears will be the first televised game of the CIAA for 2016.

The Virginia State Department of Athletics annual 1,000 cans, 1 goal campaign initiative is underway. The canned food items collected will be donated to the local food banks. The Department encourages all fans, alumni, faculty and friends to bring a canned food item to all of the home basketball games this season.
