Box Score ETTRICK, Va.- The Virginia State University Trojans men's basketball team finished the night strong, defeating Bowie State University 69 - 58.
VSU moves to a 13-4 overall record, 8-1 in the CIAA.
The Trojans were fueled offensively by junior
Kevin Williams (Franklinton, VA) as he ended the night with 19 points. Rookies
Cyonte Melvin (Hampton, VA) and
Joseph Bradshaw (Silver Springs, MD) each contributed 11 points for VSU while senior
Javon Moore (Fairfax, VA) rounded out the double digit scoring for the Trojans with 10 points.
VSU ended the night shooting 39 percent (23-59) from the field, 33.3 percent (7-21) from behind the arc, and 84.2 percent (16-19) at the line.
The Trojans started the night off slow, trailing the Bulldogs by as much as 11 points midway through the first half. Working to control the home court, Williams secured a 3 point shot with 1:18 remaining until halftime, which cut the Trojans deficit to 1 point. Despite VSU's efforts, the Bulldogs carried a 32-27 lead into halftime.
Less than five minutes into the second half, Williams knocked down a 3 point shot to give the Trojans a 34 -33 lead over the Bulldogs. Moments later Moore linked up with Melvin on a fast break for a high energy, crowd pleasing dunk. Â VSU never looked back as they controlled the lead for the remainder of the game and took the 69-58 victory.
The Trojans will be back in action on Saturday, January 30 as they travel to Lincoln, PA to take on Lincoln University. Tip-off is set for 4 pm.

The Virginia State Department of Athletics annual 1,000 cans, 1 goal campaign initiative is underway. The canned food items collected will be donated to the local food banks. The Department encourages all fans, alumni, faculty and friends to bring a canned food item to all of the home basketball games this season.
