Box Score ETTRICK, Va.- The VSU Trojans men's basketball team thrashed the Johnson C. Smith University Golden Bulls on January 12 with a final score of 83-68.
 
With the win the Trojans improve to 11-3 overall record, and hold an undefeated 6-0 record in the CIAA conference. 

VSU ended the night shooting 50.8 percent (31-61) from the field, 47.4 percent (9-19) from behind the arc, and 57.1 percent (12-21)  at the line.  
 
Junior forward Melvin Gregory (Weems, VA) led the Trojans offensively and defensively recording 14 points and securing 8 boards.  Freshman guard Cyonte Melvin (Hampton, VA) and All-CIAA Preseason Pick junior forward Elijah Moore (Yorktown, VA) each contributed 13 points. Junior guard Kevin Williams (Franklinton, VA) rounded out double-digit scoring for the Trojans with 11 points. 
 
A jump shot by Williams early in the first half gave the Trojans  the momentum to pull away from the Golden Bulls with a score of  14-6. There was no chance of JCSU coming back as VSU continued to secure baskets. The men entered halftime with a 20 point lead and a score of 44-24.
 
The Trojans continued to dominate the court in the second half, leading by as much as 25 points. The Golden Bulls attempted to fight back, cutting the lead to 12 points with 4:12 remaining in the game, but the Trojans maintained their edge for the 83-68 victory.
 
The Trojans will be back in action on Sunday, January 17 as they take on Virginia Union University for the annual Freedom Classic game. Tickets can be purchased at the VSU Athletics Office for $23. Students can pick up their free ticket at the VSU Athletic Office by presenting their VSU ID. 
 
The Virginia State Department of Athletics annual 1,000 cans, 1 goal campaign initiative is underway. The canned food items collected will be donated to the local food banks. The Department encourages all fans, alumni, faculty and friends to bring a canned food item to all of the home basketball games this season.
