RALIEGH, NC. - The Trojan softball team had a split day during the CIAA Championship on May 2. VSU advanced out of the elimination bracket by defeating the Lady Bulldogs of Bowie State University with a final score of 15-4, but fell short in the following round of play with a loss to the Winston-Salem State University Rams with a final score of 10-2.
During the elimination round, junior
Lindsey Wilkins is credited for the win after allowing 4 runs on 4 hits and giving 2 strikeouts in the 5 inning matchup.
Leading the Trojans with 5 RBI's was junior
Krysten Davis while junior Verlishia Brandon took control with 3 runs.
Sophomore
Marissa Hughes started the game off strong for the Trojans, hammering the ball over the fence for a homerun and gaining 2 RBI's.
VSU kept the momentum to take an early lead in the 2
nd inning securing 7 runs. In the 4
th inning the team expanded the scoring gap by collecting 5 additional runs. They sealed their 15-4 win in the 5
th inning by holding the Lady Bulldogs down with 3 consecutive strikeouts.
In the matchup against the Lady Rams, Wilkins started the game off on the mound allowing 5 runs on 5 hits. Junior
Mckenzie Love came in and took the loss by allowing 5 runs on 9 hits and giving 1 strikeout.
In the 4
th inning the Trojans got on the board with a run by Hughes and rookie Tatyanna Jordan.
After 5 innings, VSU fell short with a final score of 10-2.
The Trojans wrap up their season with an overall record of 14-17, a conference record of 11-8 and a division record of 8-3.
