RALEIGH, NC- The Virginia State University softball team took down the Lady Broncos of Fayetteville State University (FSU) with a final score of 12-4 in round 1 of the CIAA Softball Championship at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex on April 30.
Junior
Lindsey Wilkins took the mound for the first 3 innings holding the Lady Broncos to 4 hits, 4 runs, 2 errors and 2 strikeouts. Junior
Mckenzie Love stepped in for the remaining 3 innings putting a holt to FSU's scoring. She is credited for the win after allowing 3 hits and giving 1 strikeout.
Carley Green of the Lady Broncos took the loss after yielding 8 runs on 9 hits in the 4.1 innings she pitched. FSU's Zoe Howard pitched the remaining .2 innings allowing 4 runs on 3 hits.
Senior
Jameshia Smith led the Trojans with 3 runs and secured 3 RBI's, 2 of which came from her homerun at the bottom of the 3
rd inning.
Junior
Cameryn Smith took the helm with 6 RBI's. She changed the game at the bottom of the 5
th inning with a grand slam to center field. This is the first grand slam of the season for the team.
The Lady Broncos could not regroup in the 6
th inning, allowing the Trojans to seal the win with 5 additional runs.
After 6 innings, the final score was 12-4.
VSU is currently 13-15 on the season, 10-7 in the conference and 7-3 in the division.
The Trojans will take on the Southern Division no.1 seed St. Augustine's University at 1:30 p.m. on April 30 for round 2 of the CIAA Softball Championship.
