Trojans Victorious on Day 1 of Embry-Riddle Tournament

Box Score DAYTONA BEACH, Fl. – The VSU Trojans men's basketball team took down the Javelinas of Texas A&M Kingsville on December 19 with a final score of 80-55. The Javelinas are one of the top teams in Lone Star Conference.

The win advances the Trojans to a 8-2 overall record, while the Javelinas fall to a 7-3 overall record.

VSU shot 44.8 percent (30-67) from the field, 40.0 percent (10-25) from behind the arc and 66.7 percent (10-15) from the free throw line.

Junior and All-CIAA Preseason pick Elijah Moore (Yorktown, VA) controlled the game in scoring with 20 points. Rookie Joesph Bradshaw (Silver Springs, MD) rounded out the double digit scoring for the Trojans with 11 points. Rookie Cyonte Melvin (Hampton, VA) led the game in recoveries with 11 rebounds.

The Trojans started the first half off strong with a shot from behind the arc by junior Melvin Gregory (Weems, VA ). VSU began to gain momentum on the court after Moore secured a jumper with 13:51 on the clock, giving VSU an 8 point lead. The scoring gap continued to increase, until the Javelinas got within 2 points of the Trojans with 2:58 left in the half. Rookie Walter Williams (Richmond, VA) answered back with a 3 pointer followed by a layup and dunk by Moore. After regaining their composure, the Trojans entered halftime in the lead with a score of 45-36.  

Despite Texas A&M Kingsville collecting the first two baskets of the second half, Moore responded with a shot from behind the arc to help extend the lead. The Javelinas attempted to bounce back but were unsuccessful as VSU took a 25 point lead. The Trojans advance to a 5 game winning streak with a final score of 80-55.

VSU secured their win by outscoring Texas A&M Kingsville in points off of turnovers, 2nd chance points, bench points, baskets in the paint and fast break points.

The Trojans will play their final game of the 2015 season on Sunday, December 20 against the Embry-Riddle University in Daytona Beach, FL. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m.

The Virginia State Department of Athletics annual 1,000 cans, 1 goal campaign initiative is underway. The canned food items collected will be donated to the local food banks. The Department encourages all fans, alumni, faculty and friends to bring a canned food item to all of the home basketball games this season.
