Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, NC – The VSU Trojans men's basketball team secured their fourth consecutive win of the season with a 98-92 victory over the Fayetteville State University Broncos on December 17.
The win advances the Trojans to a 7-2 overall record, 3-0 in the conference. FSU falls to a 5-6 overall record, 0-2 in the conference.
VSU finished the night shooting 53.2 percent (33-62) from the field, 36.4 percent (8-22) from behind the arc and 63.2 percent (24-38) from the free throw line.
Junior
Kevin Williams (Franklinton, NC) took control of the game for the Trojans with 22 points while rookie
Joseph Bradshaw (Silver Springs, MD) chipped in 12 points. This was the second consecutive game Bradshaw led VSU in recoveries, jumping up for 7 rebounds. Sophomore
Waymond Wright (Raleigh, NC) tallied 11 points while junior and CIAA Preseason pick
Elijah Moore (Yorktown, VA) rounded out the double-digit scoring with 10 points.
The Broncos were led by Joshua Dawson with 32 points and Jason Lee with 12 rebounds.
VSU did not hesitate to take an early lead over the Broncos in the first half. Maneuvering down the court with jump shots and 3 pointers, VSU secured a 23 point lead over FSU with 2:44 left in the half. Despite the Broncos answering back to
Waymond Wright's 3 pointer with 1:40 left on the clock, they failed to close the scoring gap as VSU enter halftime with a 49-33 lead.
The Trojans maintained a strong double-digit lead for majority of the second half. With 4:20 left in the game, the Broncos got within 9 points of Trojans and worked to close the scoring gap. Utilizing shots at the line, jumpers and second chance points, VSU was able to hold FSU to a 6 point trail. The Trojans left the court victorious with a 98-92 win.
VSU secured their victory by outscoring the Broncos in points off of turnovers, bench points, baskets in the paint and fast break points.
The Trojans will round out 2015 on December 19-20 in Daytona Beach, FL for the Embry-Riddle Tournament. Tip-off against Texas A&M Kingsville on December 19 is set for 4 p.m.
The Virginia State Department of Athletics annual 1,000 cans, 1 goal campaign initiative is underway. The canned food items collected will be donated to the local food banks. The Department encourages all fans, alumni, faculty and friends to bring a canned food item to all of the home basketball games this season.
