Box Score RALEIGH, NC – The Virginia State University Trojans men's basketball team thrashed the St. Augustine's University Falcons on December 15 with a final score of 86-63.
The win advances the Trojans to a 6-2 overall record, 2-0 in the conference. SAU falls to a 5-5 overall record, 0-1 in the conference.
VSU shot 48.4 percent (30-62) from the field, 33.3 percent (7-21) from behind the arc and 67.9 percent (19-28) from the free throw line.
The Trojans worked together to outscore the Falcons on the court. Junior
Kevin Williams (Franklinton, NC) led the Trojans with 16 points, while rookie
Joseph Bradshaw (Silver Springs, MD) was close behind with 14 points. Bradshaw led VSU in recoveries, jumping up for 7 rebounds. Rookie
Walter Williams (Richmond, VA) and sophomore
Waymond Wright (Raleigh, NC) each put up 11 points while junior and CIAA Preseason pick
Elijah Moore (Yorktown, VA) rounded out the double-digit scoring with 10 points.
VSU quickly dominated the court in the first half, holding SAU to a single digit score (22-9) with 8:11 left until halftime. Williams controlled the half, earning 10 points. The Falcons handed the ball off to their leading scorer Quincy January to help close the scoring gap. The attempt was not success, as VSU was in the lead at halftime with a score of 45-27.
Although the Falcons entered the second half with the playing strategy of keeping their leading scorer Quincy January in control of the ball, their efforts fell short. His 19 points in the final half could not match the teamwork of VSU on the court. Bradshaw led the half with 9 points and 6 rebounds, while teammate sophomore
Tyler Peterson (Virginia Beach, VA) was equally matched with 6 rebounds. With 10:00 left in the game, the Trojans led by 6. Capitalizing off of free throws and layups, VSU was able to regain a double digit lead for an 86-63 victory.
VSU secured their win by outscoring the Falcons in points off of turnovers, 2
nd chance points, bench points, and baskets in the paint.
The Trojans will travel to Fayetteville, NC on Thursday, December 17 to face the Broncos of Fayetteville State University. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
The Virginia State Department of Athletics annual 1,000 cans, 1 goal campaign initiative is underway. The canned food items collected will be donated to the local food banks. The Department encourages all fans, alumni, faculty and friends to bring a canned food item to all of the home basketball games this season.
