Box Score ETTRICK, Va.- The Virginia State University Trojans Men's Basketball team had an explosive night against Washington Adventist University Shock resulting in an 99 - 64 victory.
With the win, the Trojans improve to a 4-2 overall record on the season.
VSU shot 61.1 percent (22-36) from the field, 67.7 percent (6-9) from behind the arc, and 66.7 percent (2-3) from the line in the first half.
VSU trailed the WAU in the first five minutes of the game until a jump shot by junior
Melvin Gregory (Weems, VA) tied the game 11-11. The Trojans never looked back and went into halftime with a 20 point lead and the games momentum in their hands.
The Trojans shot 45.9 percent (17-37) from the floor, 80 percent (4-5) from behind the arc, and 90 percent (9-10) from the charity line in the second half.
Rookie
Walter Williams (Richmond, VA) led the Trojans in scoring with 18 points, senior
Te'Quan Alers (Fredricksburg, VA) followed up with 12 points, freshman
Cyonte Melvin (Hampton, VA) contributed 11 points, while junior
Elijah Moore (Yorktown, VA) rounded out the double digit scoring for the Trojans with 10 points. Senior
Javon Moore (Fairfax, VA) led the Trojans in rebounding and assist recording 6 boards and 5 assist.
VSU ended the night shooting 53.4 percent (39-73) from the field, 71.4 percent (10-14) from behind the arc, and 84.6 percent (11-13) from the free throw line.
The Trojans exhibited unselfish play, sharing the basketball, which contributed to their success offensively over the Shock.
"We did a good job of being unselfish, playing the game, and moving the ball to the open man," said Head Coach
Lonnie Blow, Jr. "It was good for us to get out there and get the bad taste out of our mouths from the lost we took last weekend. It's always good to go out on a win, we have a little lay off here we don't play again until December 6."
VSU will take the court against Virginia Union University at 4 p.m. on Sunday, December 6 at the Arthur Ashe Center in Richmond, VA.
The Virginia State Department of Athletics annual 1,000 cans, 1 goal campaign initiative is underway. The canned food items collected will be donated to the local food banks. The Department encourages all fans, alumni, faculty and friends to bring a canned food item to all of the home basketball games this season.
