Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C.- The Trojan men's basketball team conquered the Johnson C. Smith University Golden Bulls on January 12 with a final score of 74-63. This was the third consecutive road game for the team this week. VSU advances to a 10-5 overall record, 4-2 in the conference.
VSU shot 41.9 percent (26-62) from the field, 53.3 percent (8-15) from behind the arc and 70.0 percent (14-20) from the free throw line.
Senior
Lamar Kearse took the helm of the game for the Trojans by securing 22 points. Senior
Alphonso Leary led the team in with 9 rebounds while collecting 14 points. Sophomore
Elijah Moore worked the court to gain 13 points while junior
Te'Quan Alers added 10 points to the books.
The Trojans could not be stopped in the first half. Moore started the game off with a shot from behind arc, setting the tempo for his teammates. VSU was up by 9 with 11:54 on the clock. JCSU attempted to take the lead at the end of the half, but was unsuccessful. The halftime score was 33-31.
In the second half, the Trojans had a close call letting the Golden Bulls tie the game up twice. After Kearse broke the second tie with 10:38 left in the game, VSU would jump ahead with baskets by the games top scorers. The final score was 74-63.
VSU will take on the Panthers of Virginia Union University on Sunday, January 18 for the annual Freedom Classic Festival at the Richmond Coliseum. Tip-off is at 7 p.m.
