ETTRICK, VA – The Virginia State University softball team clinches the CIAA Northern Division title with a sweep over Elizabeth City State University 9-0 and 7-2 on Sunday afternoon. The victories move the Trojans to 18-7 on the season, 15-1 in CIAA play while the Lady Vikings fall to 7-21 on the year and 6-9 in CIAA play.
Sunday was Senior Day for the Trojans.
Jessica Mattia (Accokeek, MD),
Brittany Payne (Colonial Beach, VA),
Endya Bailey (Portland, OR) and
Tierra Pendergrass (Columbus, OH) were honored in-between games. The Trojans improved to 9-1 in the division.
Off to a slow start for both teams, the Trojans scored all of their nine runs in the fourth inning as a host of Trojans collected RBI's.
In just five innings of play, the Trojans shutout the Lady Vikings to secure a 9-0 victory in game one.
Jameshia Smith (Halifax, VA) and
Sade Holmes (Caroline County, VA) led the Trojans with 2 RBI's apiece.
Mattia took the win at the mound as she allowed three hits, one walk while earning five strikeouts.
In game two of the double header, the Trojans led at the bottom of the second inning until the Lady Vikings scored two runs off two hits to take the lead at the top of the third inning.
The Trojans gained four runs in the bottom of the third to lead 5-2 and one run in both the fourth and fifth inning to wrap up game two with a score of 7-2.
With the win, the Trojans improve their winning streak to six games.
The Trojans return to action on April 10
th for their last regular season game as they host Bluefield State College in a non-conference game. The first pitch is slated for 2:00 pm.
