PETERSBURG, VA – The Virginia State Trojans came up short in a tight 6-5 decision against Virginia Union University on Friday afternoon at the Petersburg Sports Complex in the CIAA tournament.The Virginia Union loss in the double-elimination tournament ended the Trojans' season.
The Trojans trailed 1-0 in the first and second inning but VSU's
Endya Bailey doubled out to centerfield to advance
Jamilia Smith to home plate following
Janay Joseph's single up the middle to bring home Bailey giving the Trojans a 2-1 lead going into the third inning.
VSU appeared to be heading for victory over Virginia Union with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to lead 4-1 going into the seventh inning however; the Lady Panthers would earn five RBI's for a total of five runs in that inning.
The Trojans would not be able to come back in the seventh inning as they would only score just one run in the bottom of the seventh suffering a season-ending setback.
Raelea Taylor led the Trojans with two RBI's while Bailey, Joseph and
Verlisha Brandon had one RBI in the loss.
