ETTRICK, VA – The Virginia State University softball team finished their season off with two wins, 5-1 and 11-9 over Bluefield State College on Thursday afternoon in a non-conference doubleheader game held on the campus of Virginia State University.
The Trojans improve to 20-6 on the season while the Blues fall short with a 7-20 record overall.
Endya Bailey (Portland, OR) boosted the Trojans offense early on as she hit a double out to left field to advance runners
Jameshia Smith (Halifax, VA) and
Jamilia Smith (Halifax, VA) to home plate for two runs.
Bluefield State captured one run at the top of the third with a sacrifice bunt to score Reeva Davis.
VSU would shut the Blues out the remainder of the ball game as the Trojans were able to collect three runs off of five hits to lead 5-1, winning game one.
Jessica Mattia (Accokeek, MD) took the win at the mound as she only allowed one run, walking one and striking out four batters at the plate.
To start off game two of the double header,
Marissa Hughes (Upper Marlboro, MD) started for the Trojans at the mound as they were able to gain three quick outs at the top of the first inning.
VSU would open up the offensive gates when they scored nine runs off of ten hits.
As both teams accounted for errors and stolen bases, Bluefield State turned up their momentum at the top of the third inning when they scored three runs.
VSU led by just three runs going into the bottom of the sixth inning as they allowed BSC to score two runs after collecting two errors.
The Trojans allowed the Blues to gain one run before holding them off in the top of the seventh inning for an 11-9 victory.
The Trojans awaits the seeding for the CIAA championship games starting on April 17
th in Petersburg, VA at the Petersburg Sports Complex.
