Raleigh, NC – The Virginia State University softball team topped Johnson C. Smith University 8-3 on Monday morning in the last day of the CIAA Softball Round-Up at Walnut Creek Complex. The Trojans improve to 11-5 overall and 10-0 in the league with the win while the Golden Bulls slip to 6-12 on the year and 2-2 in CIAA play after the loss.
The Trojans trailed the Golden Bulls in the first three innings of the game as Johnson C. Smith scored two runs in the bottom of the second.
VSU made a run of their own to tie the ball game during the top of the fourth as
Janay Joseph (Eastern Shore, VA) singled to left field to score teammate
Endya Bailey (Portland, OR) to earn an RBI following
Raelea Taylor's (Aquasco, MD ) single to second base also earning an RBI allowing Joseph to advance home.
Bailey would earn two RBI's in the top of the fifth when she hit a single to center field advancing
Cameryn Smith (Powhatan, VA) to second base and
Jamilia Smith (Halifax, VA) to score while
Logan Tollison (Chester, VA) would score on an unearned run to put the Trojans up 5-2.
The Golden Bulls would not have enough to compete with the Trojans as they scored just one run in the seventh before the Trojans would finish the game off with a single from
Jessica Mattia (Accokeek, MD) to advance runners Taylor to third base and Joseph to home plate.
Mattia finished the game pitching with seven strikeouts, allowing eight hits and a total of three runs.
Virginia State will travel to Bowie State University for a doubleheader on March 29
th at 1:00 pm.
