RALEIGH, NC – The Virginia State University Trojans (9-5, 8-0 CIAA) upends a 3-0 victory over the Winston-Salem State's Lady Rams (8-9, 1-1 CIAA) Saturday at the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Round-Up at the Walnut Creek Complex.
Although Lady Rams had some efforts at the plate it would not be enough to hold against the Trojans as they charged to a shutout win.
The win came in spite of some solid hits from the Lady Rams who totaled more hits (5) than the Trojans (4). Junior Jamila Smith (Halifax, VA),
Sophomore
Cameryn Smith (Powhatan, VA) and Freshman
Marissa Hughes (Upper Marlboro, MD) all collected RBI's for the game while the Lady Rams struggled with only two base runners reaching third base for the game.
After going scoreless in the first three innings, the Trojans gained two fourth inning scores off an RBI single from Smith as her sister
Jameshia Smith (Halifax, VA) ran to third base and DeMone Brickhouse (Southampton, VA) ran to home plate. Following an RBI sacrifice fly from
Cameryn Smith to left field,
Jamilia Smith would advance to third base as her twin sister
Jameshia Smith would advance home.
VSU senior pitcher
Jessica Mattia (Accokeek, MD) took the pitching victory, allowing five hits and no earned runs. She finished the day with six strikeouts.
With the win, the Trojans improve to 9-5 on the season and 8-0 in CIAA play.
